Love novels are something, aren’t they?
On one side you see a world so different from the one you live in, with dragons, fairies and sometimes a demon lord.
But on the other hand, the theme of love is always present. So there’s always something in every world that you understand.
If you’re looking for that fabulous romantic combination, you’ve come to the right place. We look at a few gems of the genre that are worth checking out.
15. Kokoro Connect
I think we can all agree that high school is as confusing as it gets.
Your hormones are going crazy, your character is all over the place and your attempts to fall in love can be a success or a failure.
But the cast of Kokoro Connect is even worse, as not only the group of five people at the high school, but also a very annoyed stranger begins to get annoyed.
He makes them switch bodies, share certain emotions and other confusing things. And with so much chemistry and love between the five, you can imagine how hard it can be.
14. The betrothed of the old magician
This show starts off on a depressing note. But don’t be fooled.
We see a young girl being auctioned off in the hope of finding a place where she can feel at home. It appears to be the tallest man in the head mask.
Although it sounds like the plot of a horror movie, we (and the girl) soon realize that the man is very nice and that he plans to make the girl his student (and his fiancée).
A student of what, you might ask?
Through magic, of course.
13. Natsuki’s appointment
In its concept alone, this show lives up to the others – ingenious and funny at the same time.
We follow a young man named Ryosuke who falls in love with a widow who owns her own flower shop.
He decides to take action, but he discovers that the ghost of his late husband is still hanging around the old shop and doesn’t appreciate anyone taking his wife.
Given that only Ryosuke can see the ghost, it sounds like a brilliant comedy.
However, while the series is certainly very funny, it should not be overlooked as a romantic story.
12. Monogatari series
The Monogatari series is such a huge world that you’re sure to find something you like.
Whether it’s frog-like vampires, Yander snake chicks, mysterious villains or the all-knowing man in the Hawaiian shirt, there’s something for everyone.
But the romantic relationship that develops between Araragi and Senjugahara is just as perfect and believable.
Of course, she could have attacked him in their first meeting. But their alchemy really makes the room blossom into something beautiful.
11. Jonah Dawn
If you’re looking for a good old-fashioned princess love story, look no further.
Keeper Yona is pretty standard when it comes to princess characters; she’s incredibly protective and delusional about the things that plague her people.
But everything changes when her cousin does a 180 and suddenly kills her father, forcing her to flee the kingdom.
What’s that? Did Huck, her childhood friend and pie man, run off with her too? I wonder what happens now.
10. Your name.
If you like fantasy romance and you have a movie theater within 100 miles of your home, you’ve probably seen this movie before.
It’s the simple story of two people who switch bodies at random one day.
They lead very different lives and must communicate with each other through diaries and marking tattoos to keep the other from ruining their lives.
But maybe there’s something more important in the background that’s behind all this?
Who knows? There’s only one way to find out.
9. The rascal does not dream of Sanpai rabbit
Many people underestimate this series because of the cover and the fact that it has the words Rabbit Girl in the title.
But honestly, it’s much more than just an ecchi show.
In the world of Bunny Girl Senpai, there is a disease called puberty syndrome. But instead of giving people acne and their first menstrual cramps, puberty syndrome does something much more delicate and supernatural.
Maybe it makes you invisible, maybe you have gaping wounds without blood, or maybe you just lose your memory. This is pure speculation.
I’m sure the main character will try to help, and maybe cuddle up with his senpai by his side.
8. Snow White with red hair
You don’t have to be a detective to realize that this series looks like an homage to the original Snow White series, although in my opinion it goes way beyond that.
This time it’s about a presenter working as an herbalist who one day becomes the target of a very possessive prince.
She moves away from him to fall into the arms of the objectively superior prince of Zen.
Zen decides to protect our heroine, and in return she promises an alliance with her kingdom and uses her magic to create a new cure.
So not only is our female lead much more independent and interesting than the original Disney film, but the prince here respects his individuality and is still a good looking guy. Sign me up.
7. Kamisama Kus
The preparation for this series was quite hectic, but I was glad she left me.
We see a young girl plunged into despair as her father’s gambling addiction pushes her into debt.
But one day she sees a man being chased by a dog and decides to help him, just like the man. But the man then offers her the house as a thank you.
Sike, this guy actually offered her a destroyed sanctuary because he had been her god up until that point…. and now this guilt is falling on our heroin. Pretty cool, huh?
But there’s a famous fox in the temple, and he’s hot. What’s the next step?
6. Hotarubi no Mori e
If you’re looking for a good lament, go see this movie, it really is a masterpiece.
She follows a girl who gets lost in the woods and comes across a little boy wearing a mask.
The boy turns out to be a ghost and he leads them home. But the girl returns to the woods year after year, attached to her new ghost friend.
The only problem is that they can never touch each other, otherwise it disappears. And hum the song Thou shalt be king again, and now the tears.
5. Herbs and Wolf
The pairing of the lovebirds in this series seems pretty random at first, but in a few episodes it becomes so brilliant.
On one hand, you have a traveling salesman who just wants to make a little money.
On the other hand, you have a wolf goddess who is tired of not being appreciated by the people whose crops are blessed.
So she took a nap in the men’s car. And coincidentally, they begin to travel together.
The alchemy is immediately apparent to the viewer, but it certainly takes a little longer to achieve.
4. With you again
The movie Weather with You tells the story of two teenagers looking for a place to call home.
The thing is, the girl is definitely stranger, able to part the clouds and make the sun appear.
The two teenagers, who met by chance, quickly formed a close bond. And even the solar trade.
But with great power comes great responsibility. And with great romance comes a great movie.
3. Line sword Art
The anime community has a very strong love-hate relationship with Sword Art Online.
But I think some of his merits have yet to be mentioned. You’d think you were in the shoes of grandfather Isekai, and the quality of the animation and fight scenes is not to be trifled with.
But for many people, the selling point was the romance that developed between Kirito and Asuna.
At least they are much more involved than is normally the case with Isekai. I mean, at some point they kind of had a baby. Wild, I know.
2. No game, no life Zero
While many fans were probably disappointed to not see a No Game, No Life movie with Sora and Shiro, I think they got over it quickly.
A prequel to the beloved series, this film tells the story of a man named Rick and an old car he calls Shvi.
The world is in total chaos as sixteen races fight for supremacy and the title of God, while two exiled heroes try to make sense of the world and themselves.
They form an unlikely duo and bring out the best in each other. They manage to find subtle happiness in a world of total darkness.
I wasn’t disappointed.
1. Fruit basket
A classic fantasy romance, Fruits Basket tells the story of a girl named Toru and her relationship with the Suma family.
Through a series of unfortunate circumstances, Toru becomes homeless. But she is invited by Yuki Suma (the thinking head of her school) to stay with her family until she finds a place.
But then she learns that a curse is affecting Suma’s family: When kissed by people of the opposite sex, they turn into animals of the zodiac.
In terms of romance, the person to watch out for is Q, who has the astrological sign of the cat and is ostracized by his family.
